On September 6th, 2018 teacher Roxana Sanchez from the Slawson Southeast Occupational Center (SSOC) was recognized as a Teacher-of-the-Year in the City of Bell.  The event held at The Bell Community Center and guest speakers included the City of Bell Mayor Fidencio Joel Gallardo and President & Superintendent of Cerritos Community College Dr. Jose Fierro. Several teachers were honored from a range of K-12 schools and Ms. Sanchez was the only one selected from an adult school. This honor was particularly meaningful to her as it is her 25th year of being an adult education teacher in the field of cosmetology.

In response to receiving the award, Ms. Sanchez stated:

“I feel there is a big need in our Los Angeles communities to help those communities where the resources are limited, and where people are not aware of the opportunities available to them. I’ve been putting my heart and energy not only to teach a trade, but to help my students become better citizens where they can also help their community by transforming their lives and open the doors to a new and better future. Education to me is not only to teach, but to offer help and the tools necessary for success to the ones in need.”

Ms. Sanchez also expressed her gratitude for the support she has received from SSOC’s Principal Bernadine Gonzalez and Assistant Principal Latasha Hawthorne.
