Sonia Gonzalez had a dream to work in the medical field, but she didn’t know where to start or how to pay for training. Fortunately, Sonia came to the West Adams WorkSource Center. There, she began working with Patrick Thai, Vocational Counselor, and Mark Lawrence, one of the Division of Adult & Career Education (DACE)’s WIOA Navigators.
The three worked in partnership, and soon Sonia received full funding for the CNA training program at DACE’s Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center. She graduated in June and passed her state licensing exam on the first try! Within a week she had multiple job prospects and choose to work at Maple Health Care Center, a skilled-nursing facility specializing in the treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments.
Sonia says, “My CNA teacher, Ms. Camacho was great! Lots of energy! It was exciting to go to class every day. She really helped us. I’m so grateful to her and Patrick and Mark for all the support they’ve given me.”
Sonia now wants to pursue her next goal of becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Maxine Waters Employment Prep Center offers an outstanding LVN program. Sonia plans to apply and continue working with DACE Navigators and WorkSource centers to make her dream a reality!
